Ritmo is a small Android app for one thing: Japanese interval walking. It calls out every switch between easy and brisk walking so you can keep your eyes up and just walk.

Who makes it

Ritmo is made by J&H Labs, an independent two-person software studio in India founded by Jithin Sebastian and Shilpa Xavier. We design, build and run our own products, and keep each one small, fast and respectful of your privacy.

Why we built it

Ritmo started with Jithin’s mother, Theresa, who is in her seventies. She came across Japanese interval walking online while looking for a way to counter the effects of ageing, and took it up. She walks outdoors three or four days a week, and says it leaves her feeling more energetic.

The method is simple, but one part of it is fiddly: keeping track of which three-minute block you are in and when to switch, without staring at a watch. That is the problem Ritmo solves. It counts the intervals and announces each change out loud.

Who writes our guides

Our guide to Japanese interval walking is published under Theresa’s name, and she has read and approved it. You can read more about her on her author page. She is a practitioner, not a health professional, and the guide says so.

We hold the guides to three rules. Research claims are cited to the original published study, with a link you can check. Numbers from a study are reported as what that study found, not as promises. And anything that touches on health tells you to check with a doctor before you start. If you spot an error, email hello@ritmodigital.uk and we will correct it.

Where the app stands

Ritmo is not yet available to download. It is coming soon to Google Play. This page and the home page will link to the listing once it is live.
